Having the sand around most of my brassicas really helped keep the weeds down although it was a bit like doing the limbo trying to get under the bamboo canes when I decided to weed the bed and plant out some cauliflowers and kale.

I've decided what to do next year, I'm going to lay cardboard over all the paths and cover with straw , this should be the cheapest and greenest option. The problem is at the moment I am trying to work out a period of time in between injection that suits my body and I am still trying to find it as my body is not happy with the period the Dr is prescribing. Anyway enough of the sob story in a nutshell I've had no energy and haven't left the house much so the allotment was the least of my worries and when I went up there this week I could of cried it was so over grown.

All my hard work at the beginning of the year had gone to waste and I couldn't help but think it was because I was lazy even though I knew it was because of my illness...damn body.

Luckily my OH was kind enough to offer to come up with me today to try and get it back under control and we got about 1/3 cut back but lots of plants had to be sacrificed. It's horrible I spent so much time sorting it out at the beginning of the year and now it's all gone to waste. I really don't want to have to give up the allotment as it gives me great satisfaction and as we don't have a garden it's ideal but I need to find a way to make it easier...answers on a postcard.

Anyway here's a few pics for you to understand how I feel:

Before:

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I was cutting the grass with a shear (I think that's what they're called) and I noticed something moving so I stopped and noticed a toad. I went to pick it up to move it and realised it was missing a leg and had it's mouth open!!!! my first thought was I cut it off and it's sceaming, I felt sick, in fact I was almost sick.

I placed the toad on some rocks by the pond and went off to find his missing leg, I wasn't sure what I would do with it if I found it at this point. I couldn't find it, so I went back to the toad and it was dead still so I thought that's it I've killed it, I was devastated. Only then did I realise there was no blood and when I looked at the toad, where there should be a leg there was just a shrivelled end but at this point there was no rational thought all I could think was "TOAD MURDERER!!!" I thought I was supposed to be a vegan :( so off I went to dig a grave, I even made a gravestone from a bit of slate and put a letter T on it.

I went back to bury the toad but noticed the toad was gone!!! and when I inspected further I realised he was crawling away looking quite happy. Then a retraced the instance and started to think rational, there was no blood, there was no leg, the toad was shrivelled where there should be a leg, it would be very difficult to make a clean cut of the leg by a quick movement of a shear. So my conclusion is this I am 90% sure the toad had three legs before I came along but it did make me think that we should always consider nature and check before changing it, even cutting the grass!! If you know me you know how much this experience would of traumatised me hopefully the 3 legged toad will live a good long life and not encounter me again. You can guarantee I will have toad nightmares tonight!!

Allotment Catch Up

Ok haven't blogged for ages as I've been busy doing rather than talking about it, so here's a quick catch up and I will try and keep you all updated from now on. So what have I been doing well....

I've made a new bed for my strawberries, haven't got around to putting any squirrel proofing on it yet if there's such thing!!

I've built a border around two beds one for my beans and one for my potatoes. As you can see the new beds are made from bricks. We had a community day up the allotment as one of the walls had fallen over and I rescued the bricks :) I love the look of old bricks, so they now have a new destiny in life to protect my plants from harm.

I've planted out peas, beans, swede, turnip, parsnip, radish, carrot, onion, carrot, lettuce, potatoes..... When I look back I can't believe what I have done and what I have learnt. And now it's potato and seed ordering time again...

I have spent the long winter nights making a plan for new beds and making sure I can fit more in this year. I have used growveg , it's an amazing planning tool that allows you to find out about what you want to grow, how much room it will take and when to plant it. It's free to use for 30 days but the subscription is worth it as you can still play with your allotment when it's too dark, windy, cold and wet to risk the outdoors.

Wintersmith

Well Christmas has been and gone and I've been waiting for the ground to thaw out so I can dig and make my new beds. I managed to sort out 3 of the beds and weed the surrounding areas so if we have sunshine again tomorrow I will be back on top of things before I have to leave it again for another week!!

I planted out what was left of my seedlings after the slug damage. He has had an idea of adapting a second hand fire guard, just have to find one now.

I decided although I loved my shopper bike it just wasn't practical living in North Wales so I asked the chairman of the allotments to look out for a new bike for me and he had two bikes given to him and I got one of them and guess what it's purple!! My shopper had a happy ending it went to a local 60 year old who was interested in getting back into cycling.

I went away for a week the beginning of August and obviously came back to a jungle but we had a community day up the allotment yesterday so it's now all prim and proper and the whole allotments are looking great. We have the judges from Wales in Bloom coming around today which is very exciting.

Before I went away for the week OH and I discovered the smell of rotting perennials in our new compost system. We had to empty two bins full of perennial weeds covered in water that had been sitting in the sun for over two weeks it was not a pleasant experience and I have now adapted the new compost system to no water on the perennial weed bins!!!

Anyway here's what my plot is looking like at the moment....

Compost Day

We had a great day today as we had a communal compost day to sort out the compost bins. We emptied all of the bins and made different piles of compost, perennials, nettles, left overs and rubbish. It was amazing what we found in some of them, polystyrene, plastic cassette tape, shrew and toads the mind boggles. We had lots of compost at the end and I have enough to finish my plot which is great as that means I haven't had to pay for any compost to get the plot finished. We are going to now have 8 compost bins along with a perennial bin and nettle bin to make nettle feed. It was a fab day, I got to meet everyone and it was great to be up there with lots of people and pass information and stories. Here's some pictures from the day...

Baby Chilli

Earlier this week I noticed that one of my flowers on my chilli plants is starting to turn into a baby chilli. I have been officially put in charge of compost, compostwoman's information helped, so if you are reading this thankyou! There was a lady from BTCV there and she informed us that she wants to arrange an event for all local organisations and allotments to get together for a social along with some training, they will even arrange a mini bus to the event for us. The event will probably be in a local environment centre Moelyci as they have a lot of good practice going on there for us to see along with a lot of knowledgeable people. She also said she would try and arrange a group visit to Centre of Alternative Technology for us to get information from there. We also agreed it would be good to get rainwater harvesting so are going to try and get B&Q to donate some equipment to us. We are also going to try and get a bit of funding to allow us to put a roof on one of the out buildings so we can turn it into a potting shed. It's all very exciting and inspiring.

Beans and Squash are in

Risked it and went up the lottie this morning. The skies were blue by the time I left the house and I had to change into a vest top in the shed when I got up there because it was so warm. I managed to get the new bean bed finished and planted some runner beans and squashes. I got caught in a shower but it was really refreshing so I didn't bother with my coat I just enjoyed the downpour. I picked some potatoes, broad beans and peas to have for tea tonight and a bought a tub of local oak smoked sea salt made by Halen Mon on Anglesey, I think this will be lovely to go with the fresh vegetables from the lottie.

Bean a good day..

Went up the allotment yesterday and got 80% of the bean bed dug over. I didn't get that much of a harvest from it, I think this was because I left the spores for too long in the fridge and they were a solid mass before I used them. Anyway after I finished with the kit some of the straw still had spores on it so I decided to lay the straw on a shaded bit of the patch up the lottie and just see what happens. While I was planting the tomatoes, courgettes and aubergines my OH started digging the new ground in the second half of the plot. It hasn't been dug over for years so it is very tough with some well established weed roots. Hopefully I we will get it ready in the next week and I can get some late beans and squash in there. My OH came up the allotment to finish the last raised bed and got stuck in and helped clear the second half. I also resowed some seeds in the root bed. I got a row of beetroot, parsnip, onion, carrot and leeks. Managed to cut back a lot the weeds in the second half of the plot and clear all the left over wood. It's looking really good now and it was great to enjoy it with someone today, although I'm not too sure if my OH saw it like that. Hopefully we will have a warm Autumn so I can get away with a few late sowings.

Seeing the light at the end of the weeds!

Weather was grey with light showers but I decided to go up the allotment as my OH is going to be coming up with me tomorrow to finish the last raised bed so I needed to get the area clear. I think I ripped out a few of the plants while weeding as I am not sure and if in doubt rip it out!

I also got reminded of the joys of having an allotment today. I saw squirrels running around and the little robin came to say hello and feast on what I had dug up but the highlight was seeing a mother feeding her chick and then the chick went for a bath in the pond if you look really closely you can see the baby in the water.

Potato Worries

As you can see from my post below I harvested my first potatoes today and they look delish.

But shock, horror aghhhh!!!
The same time I harvested these I noticed marks on the leaves on a couple of the earlies, what is it, is it blight??? The doctors are still trying to find out the cause!!

Anyway I went home after not feeling to good and tried again today.....

Take 2

I managed to get up the allotment today, still feeling rough but I was determined to do something. It's really strange seeing things appearing when you didn't plant them.

I got given a number of kohl rabi seedlings this week. They have managed to survive in my house all week so I had to get them out today. I found an area in the new half of the patch that had some strawberries already growing in it so I decided that looks like the least amount of work, so they went in there. I had some mulch mats for the first couple and I then used some slate for the rest, hopefully this will stop the slugs!

Me vs Nettles

The lady that I was supposed to be sharing my plot with decided to give it up as she didn't have time to do anything with it so I have now taken on that half so my plot has now doubled in size!!

The downside is it is waist heigh in stingy nettles, so today I went out there armed meaning business!! I afraid I was being a typical first time mum and wrapping them in too much cotton wool. Some made it but others were placed in the compost heap to be born again next year!!

The first bed was completed so I warmed up the soil and got my broad beans in but then the damn wind and hail stones decided to behead the one poor baby. But to my amazment within a couple of weeks a new shoot appeared and it has now caught up with its brother and sisters!

My landlord managed to get me 6 bags of compost from where he works. It was a real struggle to get it up to allotments, luckily he was with me as I got half way up the hill and my legs were going like mad but the wheel barrow wasn't moving an inch!! Note to self: Get Fit!

The compost came in handy when my partner finished the second raised bed and I planted my potatoes. The compost is lovely and black and mixes well with the clay soil.

The third bed is now also completed although it was a real challenge as my partner discovered that I could not dig and flatten the earth. Anyway it got made and as it was a bit deeper than the other beds it will be christened with my root vegetables. One more bed to go, although this might take some time as my partner has an exam coming up.

The chairman has made a huge pond right next to my plot, frogs gallore! The Chairman of my allotments fixes up bikes as a hobby. He collects the bikes from the tip and does them up and sells them for £10 as £10 covers the £5 cost to buy them from the tip and he donates £5 to the Siberian Tigers. He also helps collect the bikes for Rotary as they send them to coutries less fortunate than ours.

My bike was finally completed, I am now a proud owner of an original 1970's Raleigh Shopper. This bike is going to be ideal to go to the allotments especially with the removable basket. It also reminds me of the wicked witches bike in the 'Wizard of Oz' so I will have to give the bike a new image and be known as the white witch of the allotments!

The bike's dynamo light is also still working it looks like it was bought and hardly used and has being sitting very bored in someone's shed for a long time.

The First Raised Bed Take 2

After the OH trusting my theory on how to make the first raised bed and it all going wrong we went back up the allotments on the 7th Of March to try and fix it using the man theory, extra posts!

The OH had to dig around all of the bed and take the middle bits apart and put a post in between all of the corners. Our landlord kindly brought home a pile of pallets from work for us. I don't think my OH realised how difficult the pallets would be to dismantle and when he offered he didn't realise how many I wanted but hey hoo he carried on and we had enough wood to make the one bed. Although he made the vital mistake of trusting my womans intuition on how to make it so the first attempt looked like I made had made it!!
Women's intuition is good but don't trust it when it comes to DIY! I also had a another good theory of digging around it and banging it hard with a mallet to straighten it out and as I had this theory when I was at the allotment on my own I tried it out which resulted in me cutting myself on a few rogue screw ends. I think I should stick to the planting! and that is what I did.

On the 6th of March I planted a Loch Ness thornless blackberry bush as it has promised to listen and not hurt me. I have also made friends with a little Robin who seems to be appreciating all of the worms I am turning over while digging. I can't believe how warm it has been today. I went armed with tea and cake, prime ingredients to keep you going!!

Grabbed the spade and started again, aimed to dig over half by the end of todays session and almost completed it. One thing I learned to day was my gardening gloves were not nettle proof!!! Picked up a lump of turf that was destined for the compost heap and it bit back!! My hand went straight through the one and it cracked like an egg, it even had the runny yellow inside with a slug to say hello.

It's unbelievable what you find under the ground. I started to find a number of small bones!! too small for human but they were certainly bones!! I had visions of Pet Cemetery going through my mind with a flash of Physco for good luck.

Luckily Jan one of the other allotment holders turned up and she informed me that there used to be an abattoir there!! Not very vegan but I'm sure it done the soil good. I would really like to know the history of the place, another project for a rainy day. At least I know it wasn't from the last plot owner!

It was really nice to chat to someone about the plot and the place. Jan was plating out some garlic and she had some spare and kindly give me a number of garlic plants. Which are now taking residence on my windowsill in the kitchen until I make them a new home.

After a natter and a nice warm cup of green tea and a slice of cake I dug a bit more, threw a few more weeds in the naughty corner and walked home looking very proud with garlic plants in my hand. I feel it was a successful 2nd dig and hopefully the weather will continue and the plot can be dug over by the end of the week.

The First Dig

Well we didn't get the snow and the weather looked fine and not too windy so I put my wellies in a bag and headed up the allotment for my first dig!!
